Biography
Samuel Claiborne (b. 1959) is a poet, essayist, composer, musician, film-scorer and sound-designer, video artist and photographer.
A native of New York City, he now makes his home in the Hudson valley in Rosendale NY.
His poetry has been published in many publications, including Northern Light, The Chronogram, and the anthologies Voices of the Valley and Riverine.
His essays political and environmental essays have been published in the New York Times, the Phoenix, and the Hudson Valley Chronic and are broadcast regularly on Northeast Public Radio and on his Itunes Podcast: Don't Piss in my Pocket and Tell me it's Raining. In addition, his Tangential Traveler travelogues, composed of text and pictures are widely read.
He performs as a solo artist, as one half of the experimental music duo Loons in the Monastery, and as a member of the Indian/Western fusion band, the Clear Light Ensemble.
He was also a lead guitarist, multi-instrumentalist of Things Fall Apart, a seminal band in the New York City rock/punk scene during the 70's and 80's, playing such well known venues as CBGB's and Danceteria.
He received a 2008 New NYFA (New York Foundation for the Arts) Fellowship in Music Composition for his solo piano cycle, The Annunciation.
His music has appeared in several films, including Falling Lessons, by Amy Halpern, and CoSM the Movie: Alex Grey and the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, by Nick Krasnic.
He is also a former Non-Violence Co-Ordinator for Mobilization for Survival and is still active in social and environmental justice issues.
Mr. Claiborne is a former quadriplegic whose work is informed by his experiences while paralyzed and profound gratitude for his recovery.
He is currently at work on his first novel, NODding Out and a book about his paralysis, Walking through Snow.
He has two grown children, and one maniacally purring Maine Coon cat.
